People in Projects

This page defines the individuals and groups involved in a project:

The Project Sponsor is the person or group that provides the overall authority for the project’s existence and resource allocation (particularly the financial resources).

A Steering Committee, which may not be warranted for all projects, is the group that provides governance, direction and guidance to the project.

The Project Support Centre supports projects by registering the project and providing process-related resources, such as a methodology and project templates. This includes training and educating staff in project management processes.

The Project Manager is the responsible officer for the project. There can only be one Project Manager.

An Advisory Group, which may not be warranted for all projects, is the group that provides advice and input to the project team. This group can only influence the project, and have limited authority unlike that of the Steering Committee.  Often Advisory Groups are representative of key stakeholders.

The Project Team Members includes any staff, service providers or contractors that have a direct role in undertaking project tasks.  These individuals directly or indirectly report to the Project Manager.

For more information about the roles and responsibilities of each, please go to the Project Management Plan template.
